Julian Heinen is an architectural designer with international working experience based in Vienna, Austria. He is active in academia and practice.

German-born Julian Heinen is a graduate of the Institute of Architecture, University of Applied Arts Vienna, die Angewandte, where he has been selected to be one of the few masterclass students of Tokyo-based Pitzker price winner Kazuyo Sejima. Julian Heinen joined Studio Sejima for two years and received his professional degree [MArch] at Studio Díaz Moreno García Grinda. During his studies Julian Heinen held working positions at architectural studios in Vienna, Hongkong, Berlin, Muenster and Cologne. After graduation he joined COREstudio Vienna. Alongside his responsibilities at the office working on a variety of scales including urban master planning, housing and furniture design, Julian Heinen has a teaching position at the Muenster School of Architecture. He is also enrolled in the MBA’s program of the University of Middlesex, London.

Julian Heinen‘s master thesis defines a new category of architectural space as build social condenser of informal games. Human species are social actors and social activities can happen in various ways of being together - ether with open social interaction or with ruled based social interaction. The diploma project builds on that duality of informality and formality in form of sport affordances and introduces an unplay theatre on a daily basis with its unpredicted and spontaneous forms of spectacles due to the new notion of proxemics at the after-moment of pandemics. The project offers a tool set to activate the public sphere to action by providing a system of affordances as a field of informal and formal game settings to become a social condenser and applying that system as transition at the clear defined formal condition of the Austrian national stadium and its abundant in-between space into a highly activated open urban quality.
